D'oh, it happened again.

Do you remember the post on starting potty training (which by the way went by the wayside on hurricane day and hasn't started up again) and how my daughter had chosen the Cars boys underwear for her "panties"? Well, had I known how truly kooky she is about the whole Cars movie I would have never taken her to the Disney store to pick out her costume for Halloween. Well enough of the foreshadowing. Let me set the stage. Just had lunch at the mall, had watched an hour of ice skating at the rink (she looooooooves this), and both girls were in good spirits. We pass by the Disney Store!! Oh how exciting! The store is bustling, beautiful costumes abound, and music and licensed plush toys everywhere(and it is filled to the gills with shoppers). Here is our dialogue.

Me-Athena, look at this costume. I think it's Jasmine. What do you think?

Athena-Pretty momma. Look at the blue shoes, they look like crescents.
Me- chuckle They do don't they. Do you want to try it on?
Athena-Nope.
Me-Oh baby look, it's Tinkerbell from Peter Pan.
Athena-the little angel fairy?
Me-yes, that one.
Athena strolls off just a tad to another part of the store.
Athena-Momma! Look!
Me-What baby? while still playing with Tinkerbell.
Athena-It's Cars! It's Lightening McQueen!
Me- Oh crap (in my head of course). Well, yes it is. Redirect..Redirect..Redirect
Me-Look at this one Athena, it's MULAN!!!!! Do you like it?
Athena-She's so pretty. Momma, I want Cars.
Me-You want to see it?
Athena-Yes, PLEASE!

We took it down from the rack and it was a size 4T. Too big for my size 3 LITTLE GIRL, so I assumed that was the smallest size and asked the sales person, "do you have a size 3 in this" she said "no, no we don't". Whew. "Ohhh sorry baby, they don't have your size". The sales person says, "oh that will fit her perfectly. Here, let's get it on her". Sure enough. It fit her perfectly and she looked gorgeous and had a smile beaming from ear to ear. She wanted to show daddy and Saylor instantly.

So, it looks like for Halloween 2008 Athena Blaze will be

and very very happy ;)

  1. I have a friend with the opposite issue. She is a tomboy, and somehow wound up with the girliest of girly girls. Pink bows on her soccer uniform and all.

I'm sure she will be a beautiful car ;)

  11. Darn their own little personalities! :) I'm sure she was precious.

    Happy SITS day!

  12. I heard the greatest quote yesterday..."children are not like coloring books that we can color the way we like." I love that she wants to be unique.

  13. How fabulous. I always gave my mom trouble when she wanted me to dress up girly... still rather my sweats and tees, but otherwise I came out okay... just don't ask anyone else :)

    ReplyDelete
  14. My daughter is the same way and she's only 2! She adores anything with wheels and loves the movie Cars! It's okay. Maybe Athena will be the next Danica Patrick! :-)

    ReplyDelete
  15. Haha, that is too funny! They have their own little minds... and when it's made up, it's hard to change it. LOL She's still cute!

    ReplyDelete
  16. awwwwww - I bet she looked adorable in it! My youngest has never been a girly princess girl either ... for instance, this year, she was a dead bridesmaid. I've learned to pick and choose my battles.

    Sigh.

    ReplyDelete
  17. She's the Danica Patrick of the halloween circuit....good for her....

    ReplyDelete
  18. haha. can't ever control little ones. and salespeople sure don't help, do they?

    happy SITS day!

    ReplyDelete
  19. At least it's not the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. My parents had to put up with that...until I got banned because I kept kicking people.

  20. When they start getting older, they actually have an opinion about what to be for Halloween! My little changed her mind 5 different time!

    ReplyDelete
  21. She looked wonderful in her costume. Nothing to worry about. Happy SITS day.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Cool for your daughter.

I have two daughters who are my total opposite. I love pink and girl stuff, they are both tomboyish. But occasionally, my oldest says she likes pink, so I think underneath all that, she is secretly girly-girl :-).

  23. Gotta love a girl with a mind of her own!

    ReplyDelete
  24. I'm sure she was the prettiest little car out there that night!

    Happy SITS day :D

    ReplyDelete
  25. I bet she could give those race car boys a run for their money.

    ReplyDelete
  26. A pretty red bow in her hair'll make it a little girly!

    ReplyDelete
  27. That's awesome. I'm sure she'll be adorable. One year at right around the same age my daughter was determined to be a mean pirate and so a mean pirate she was. :D

  28. How funny- we have costume drama every year. My twin girls are totally opposite, one tomboy, one princess. It makes for interesting pictures anyway!

    ReplyDelete
  29. My kiddo also *hearts* Cars, (and is also a girl) but luckily for me, she loves The Lion King even more.

So, who was she for Halloween this year? Simba. The *male* lion - and Grown-Up Simba so she could have a mane, of course.....

    Happy SITS day! :D

  30. That's a great costume. I bet she was the cutest little racer ever. Size 3 little girls shouldn't have to worry about what's for girls and what's for boys - who gets to decide that, anyway? Good for you for not insisting on a girl costume.

    ReplyDelete
  31. ya just never know what they're gonna come out with, right?? hahah- that's hysterical!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Ha! Not quite as pretty and feminine as tinkerbell but as long as she's happy with it right?

    Congrats on SITS!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Too funny, that will probably happen to me. I want my little to be such a girly girl and she will probably be just the opposite!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Don't ya hate it when the redirect does not work . . .the sales person doesn't help either? hehe

    ReplyDelete
  35. Hey, as long as she's happy, that's really all that matters. :)

    ReplyDelete
  36. At least she won't have the embarrassment of being dressed the same as any other little girl!

    ReplyDelete
  37. I have to say, I love the name Athena! Always did appreciate mythology.

It's wonderful that she's open to not the standard dress for Halloween. She's got a lot of character!

    ReplyDelete
  38. My little boy also wanted to be CARS but we couldn't find his size. I'm happy your little girl was able to find her size and was excited about her costume! I'm sure she was adorable CAR ;)

    ReplyDelete
  39. Cute!

And good for her, knowing what she wants and happy about her choice... gotta love that!

    ReplyDelete
  40. I had to remember that Halloween is the kids' holiday when my 4-year-old ditched the costume I bought her at the last minute for something she came up with from her toybox. But she looked beautiful, and her happy smile was the best!

    ReplyDelete
  41. I have a 3 year old like that except her poison is reptilian.....dinosaurs, alligators, lizards.....oh, yeah, and she's into bugs. Where's my little girl??

    ReplyDelete
  42. She will be a lovely car.

Cars are cooler than cool, after all.

    ReplyDelete
  43. ADORABLE! She would have looked amazing in the fairy and princess costumes, but she looks even more fabulous in the Cars jumpsuit, I promise! What a cutie.

I love your daughters' names. I think Athena is the BEST name. Did you name her after the goddess? I'm a huge fan of Greek Mythology.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I think it's an awesome choice. We saw a TON of disney princesses on our outings - they were a blur of satin and bows. But an adorable think-outside-the-gender-box race car driver! Now that is way cool!

    ReplyDelete
  45. hmmm....mechanics (well, mine anyway) make a lot of money.....=) very cute.

    ReplyDelete
  46. My son wanted to be Dora for Halloween when he was three...surprisingly, The Guy That's Sleeping on the Couch and I were actually down for it. He changed his mind last minute but how sweet would that have been?

    ReplyDelete
  47. i love it. maybe she'll be a ceo one day too!

    ReplyDelete
  48. so awesome!! my kind of girl! :) too cute indeed.

    ReplyDelete
  49. That is too cute! Isn't it funny how when they make up their minds that is it and their is no changing it.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Oh, that's just too cute. And socially acceptable. I've got three year old boy twins who love all things My Pretty Pony and Disney Princess. We just let 'em run with it, but surely get some looks!

    ReplyDelete
  51. That is so cute!

My son was all about Cars, but now he's into Toy Story. Wonder what she'll decide to be next year?

    ReplyDelete
  52. you are so right. I have just to opposite issue, my son would have gone for the princess.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I love individuality. Not all girls would go for that but she was stickin to her guns...or wheels however you want to look at it. :-)

And I'm sure she looked adorable.

Again, Happy SITS Day...so much fun to be the feature blog.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Congrats on being the featured blogger today! I enjoyed all of the posts...well actually...I enjoyed your whole blog!!

    ReplyDelete
  55. OH how we moms aim to please...

    ReplyDelete
  56. I think this is so sweet. What a nice Mommy to let her have the costume she wanted! My little boy likes to wear princess dresses with firefighter boots and a helmet;) I'm sure your daughter had a great Halloween!

    ReplyDelete
  57. Well, isn't it funny how their little personalities are their own!

    ReplyDelete
  58. This is year was the first year that I had to give up control on the Halloween costume! :( It happens to all of us sooner or later. Luckily, I have a younger one that I can still dictate what he wears! :)

    ReplyDelete
  59. Too cute! My oldest son always like the girly costumes until he was about 6...hard to talk him out of Cinderella and into GI Joe!

    ReplyDelete
  60. Awww, okay, that is adorable. Seriously! what, have her be one of three billion t-or-t'ers wearing fairy wings and princess gowns, or let her stand out and be herself? Good choice IMO, redirect, but if not possible, go with it.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Oh good - It's not just in my house... My 3.5 year old boy is obsessed with Cars. If I have to watch that movie, or even part of that movie again, I will run screaming from the house. And of course we have every little Cars related toy that all the adoring grandparents could buy! And the obsession has rubbed off on my 1.5 year old girl. Now they fight over Mac the truck and the newest looking Lightening McQueen, as though they don't have duplicates and triplicates of every single character. (And I don't think the youngest has even seen the movie)

    ReplyDelete
  62. I've got a princess girlie girl, and one like yours. This year she wanted anything black and scary and I really had to work on her to settle on black, but not so scary. I don't like creepy scary costumes. In the end we had a midnight fairy--in all black.

    ReplyDelete
  63. LOL! With the big smile on her face, I doubt anyone else will notice the costume. I know you were reluctant, but great job Mom!

    ReplyDelete
  64. No harm no foul. My son likes to wear his sisters princess crowns!

    ReplyDelete
  65. So cute! You need to send her over here. She would be in HEAVEN with all of Noah's Cars stuff--bedroom, all of the characters in diecast. It's just crazy!

    ReplyDelete
  66. I'm sure she was the coolest girl out there on Halloween!

    ReplyDelete
  67. Too cute! And it could be so much worse. Happy SITS day!

    ReplyDelete
  68. You mean like how Little Miss picked the Cars Pull-Ups yesterday at Target for her nappy-time Pull-Ups? Or how she was the golden flying princess who shoots spiderwebs for Halloween? (Wanted to be Tinkerbell, found out Thurs night that it was too big but she still wanted to fly like Tink and wanted to be Spiderman like Mister Man.) But hey... she's already decided that next year she's going to be a hugging and kissing robot.

I love little girls :) Yours sounds as fun as mine!

    ReplyDelete
  69. Ahahahahaha I love it! I love that you've got a little tom boy brewin'! Too funny.

    ReplyDelete
  70. We dressed my little brother up as a baby doll when he was in 1st grade. Everyone thought I had a little sister. He's now a baseball coach an an ag teacher so I guess it didn't scar him too badly :)

    ReplyDelete
  71. Too funny! They gotta have their own little personalities, now don't they?! Lol

    ReplyDelete
  72. Last year my daughter went as Sally from Cars. It was a big plush car with suspenders that she stepped into. It lasted about 10 minutes on Halloween.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Oh, I LOVE it! A race car driver... she must be quite the independent thinker - good for her!

    ReplyDelete
  74. Hilarious. they want what they want, don't they?!

    ReplyDelete
  75. omg that is the cutest!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  76. Awesome! Love it!

Hope you had a great Halloween...

    :^) Anna

  77. Ah kids, they have a mind of their own. It's so fun to see what they love.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Why the heck not? Girl racers are all the rage! Happy late SITS day.

    ReplyDelete
  79. That's OK, we'll just pair her up with one of my little nephews. He wanted the Tinkerbell one. His Mom let him have it but only to wear in the house. Sometimes you've just gotta let kids like what they like.

    ReplyDelete
  80. You're little one sounds a lot like my almost 3 year old! I bet Athena was adorable on Halloween!

    ReplyDelete
  81. At least she picked something nice. For years I insisted on dressing up in gross and/or ferocious costumes. Ugh.

    Love your blog design BTW!
